FirstNet™ Learning for Public Safety Officers

For the past month, we’ve been touring the country with the TOUGHBOOK Truck, educating the public safety community and spreading awareness about the power of FirstNet. From New Jersey to Alabama, we shared our learnings as a longtime public safety partner and empowered our customers to make the first step in their transition to FirstNet. Recently, we stopped in Orlando, FL, at the International Association of Police Chiefs Conference (IACP), to educate law enforcement professionals about the power of TOUGHBOOK and FirstNet together, alongside our partners, AT&T and Sierra Wireless. Here, we share answers to a few of the most common questions we got from IACP attendees.

1. Why FirstNet? Priority Access and Preemption for FirstNet Subscribers

At IACP, we spoke with police and public safety officers from agencies across the U.S. and listened to the reasons why they’re making the transition to FirstNet today. Here’s what we heard: Not only does the FirstNet nationwide network provide priority access – and preemption as applicable – during an emergency, it’s enabling officers to do their job more safely and efficiently, with greater confidence in their connection to dispatch and each other. For any law enforcement professional, reliable and highly secure communication is crucial in the mission critical – and often unexpected – situations that officers face every day.

2. What Devices are Compatible With FirstNet?

Another major takeaway from the conference was that officers like TOUGHBOOK for the wide variety of models that we offer – for example, a mounted officer needs a much different device than an officer in a patrol car. We also know that officers need to swap devices as they move from the field to the station, and vice versa. With a purpose-built device that can withstand extreme environments and elements – like heat, snow and dust – officers can serve confidently without losing their connection or facing device damage in the field.

3. As a TOUGHBOOK Customer, What Resources are Available to Me?

FirstNet is here, and it will forever transform how law enforcement officers serve their communities and respond to emergency situations. TOUGHBOOK and FirstNet are an unbeatable match, and we’re here to be your partner as your agency makes the transition. Hear from our team to learn more:

4. What is Band 14?

Band 14 is spectrum that the FCC has allocated for use by AT&T to enhance its FirstNet services and provide first responders with additional capacity. Band 14 is a higher performing spectrum that can better propagate in rural areas, penetrate buildings, and is capable of handling large amounts of data transmission. During an emergency, the Band 14 spectrum becomes available exclusively to first responders.
