What to Expect at ISC West 2014

ISC-West

The countdown to ISC West 2014 is on, and the buzz surrounding the latest and greatest in physical security and video surveillance solutions couldn’t be any louder.

ISC West brings together leading security vendors, installers, integrators and end users from all around the world for the largest physical security show in North America. Each year, Panasonic leverages this opportunity to engage in active discussion with customers, partners and peers on the latest trends shaking up the physical security space. This year is no exception. With more than 900 exhibiting companies and over 23,000 security professionals in attendance, we expect innovations in IP surveillance to dominate the show floor.

Some of this year’s most exciting predictions for the security industry include:

The Growth of IP Surveillance Market

According to a recent report by IHS Inc., the video surveillance market is predicted to grow more than 12 percent in 2014. In particular, panoramic network cameras (180/360°) are projected to experience over 60 percent year-over-year growth. We’ve seen tremendous interest in these cameras from industries such as retail establishments, airports and casinos because 360-degree cameras deliver tremendous flexibility and coverage capabilities, reducing the number of cameras necessary and reducing costs while increasing ROI.

Innovations to Mitigate the Big Data Boom

The proliferation of HD video surveillance cameras is also igniting a data boom. Currently, surveillance cameras generate an astounding 413 petabytes of data each day, a figure expected to double by 2017. This deluge of data will give rise to a wave of new technologies including new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standards to improve compression ratios and innovations in hard disk drive storage solutions. Ultimately, video analytics technologies have paved the way for intelligent surveillance, making video footage actionable and opening up a wealth of options for next-generation surveillance.

Greater Emphasis on Audio in IP Surveillance

Research indicates that more than 70 percent of network cameras shipped in 2013 featured either unidirectional or multidirectional audio capabilities. Audio-equipped devices offer an increased ability to monitor conversations and zero in and isolate voices in crowded environments, promising numerous benefits for security end-users seeking to reduce fraud, theft and further enhance situational awareness. However, most of the devices that offer this technology are currently underused by security professionals because of issues attributed to environmental noise and audio quality. As sound localization grows in popularity during the coming year we should expect to see greater emphasis on audio as well as new technologies designed to maximize the benefits these capabilities deliver.

Use of Facial Recognition in Retail and Law Enforcement

Facial recognition technologies will continue to make gains in retail and law enforcement. The retail industry will begin to see real value in implementing face matching technologies to gain consumer insights. Already, customers are evaluating facial recognition technology to better understand how gender and age impact the general makeup of customer traffic. Law enforcement organizations are also leveraging video surveillance in public places and facial recognition capabilities as a solution to help fight and even prevent crime.

Remote Video Surveillance and Mobile Monitoring

With remote monitoring solutions, security professionals can view and control security and surveillance systems from any internet-enabled PC, smartphone, or tablet. One of the major benefits of this trend is that it enables security professionals to increase mobility and efficiency and focus on other value-added activities, while still keeping a close eye on surveillance activity. While this technology has been around for a while, we can expect to see increased platform support and new apps that provide enhanced control and interactivity.

We will be showcasing our latest innovations in HD imaging, network recording, remote surveillance monitoring, intelligent surveillance solutions and much more this week at ISC West booth #14039. Be sure to stop by if you’re at show and take some of these new technologies for a test drive!
