Are You Getting Maximum Value from ELD?

The United States Department of Transportation’s Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate became law in February 2016 and went into effect in mid-December 2017. While the rule offers a host of benefits to commercial vehicle companies, their drivers, and the general public, companies have encountered many challenges in complying with the rule, which requires affected drivers to use an ELD to log hours when creating records of duty status (RODS) for their hours of service (HOS). The key problems they face are technologically based.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the agency in charge of enforcing the ELD mandate, outlines a number of technical specifications a device must meet to comply with the rule. Except for limited and specific situations, failure to integrate an appropriate ELD solution will result in fines and/or removal of the driver(s) or vehicle(s) from service. That’s why impacted companies are eager to find the best FMCSA-compliant ELD hardware and software.

What is the best ELD solution? Besides the aforementioned specs, the FMCSA leaves that up to the market. Previously, the agency has stated that it will allow the market to guide ELD providers in building roadworthy ELDs and fleet managers to choose the type of device used for vehicles. Given the critical purpose of the technology and the harsh conditions experienced on the road, reliability and durability are essential.

Panasonic can help commercial vehicle companies achieve and maintain ELD compliance with purpose-built, rugged mobile devices. In addition to meeting technical hardware requirements and supporting ELD software, Panasonic’s TOUGHBOOK computers, tablets and handheld products are tough enough to withstand some of the most unforgiving environments without failing.
